QR Codes for Halloween

A jack-o’-lantern drawn out of the code’s dots, for invitations, spooky signs and treat bags.

Free plan: 3 dynamic codes and unlimited static codes · No credit card

This code is real. Point your phone camera at it.

The short answer

Select the Halloween pumpkin theme in the Style tab and the code is redrawn with a jack-o’-lantern between its dots, at error-correction level H, as a standard QR code that ordinary camera apps read. Print it at least 2.5 cm (1 in) wide on invitations and treat bags and much larger on signs in dim venues, and keep the light background even when the rest of the design is black and orange.

How to make a Halloween QR code

  1. Pick what the code is for

A party RSVP and costume theme, a haunted-house route map, a pumpkin-patch booking page, a spooky playlist or a costume sale.

  2. Create a dynamic code

Save a dynamic URL code. Halloween ends on a fixed night, and you will want the same print to point somewhere else the next morning.

  3. Apply the pumpkin theme

In Style, open Holiday & art themes and choose Halloween pumpkin. For Día de Muertos altars and events, the Día de Muertos theme uses a decorated sugar skull in a scalloped rosette outline.

  4. Plan for the dark

Haunted houses and evening parties are dimly lit. Scanning in low light needs a bigger code and some light on it: a small spotlight, or a light-colored sign behind it.

  5. Test without the flashlight

Most people will not switch on their phone’s flashlight. Scan your proof in the actual lighting, from the actual distance.

Why the Halloween code should be dynamic

Halloween is one night, but the print around it is not: invitations go out weeks early, yard signs and window decals stay up into November, and treat bags end up in kitchen drawers. With a static code they all keep opening the party RSVP forever. A dynamic code can show the RSVP first, the haunted-house map on the night and the photos the morning after, and scan counts reveal whether the window decal or the invitations did the work. The pumpkin theme is free; adding your own photo inside the code is part of Pro.

Common mistakes

Inverting the colors for a spooky look.Light dots on a black background confuse many scanners. Keep dark dots on the light background.
Glow-in-the-dark or holographic finishes. They look great and reflect or blur the dots. Keep special finishes around the code.
Small codes in dark rooms.Phones lose detail in low light. Go bigger and light the sign.
A heavy page for a crowded street.Trick-or-treat streets and parties have busy mobile networks. Link to a light page.
Leaving the RSVP open after the party.Repoint the invitation to the photos or a thank-you note on 1 November.

Tip: on treat bags, link to a page listing the allergens in the candy inside. Parents check, and it is the scan that most often gets used.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make a pumpkin QR code for Halloween?

You can make a QR code with a jack-o’-lantern drawn inside it. The code itself stays square so ordinary cameras read it; the pumpkin shows between the dots.

Will a Halloween QR code scan in a dark haunted house?

Only if it is big enough and lit. Use 15 cm or more for signs read from a metre away, light it from the front, and test it in the real lighting.

Is there a Día de Muertos theme?

Yes. It uses a decorated sugar skull in a scalloped rosette outline with marigold-orange tones, and it is free like the other holiday themes.

Can I reuse my Halloween code next year?

Yes, if it is dynamic. Keep the printed decorations and change the destination each October.
